All Wrapped up in a Bow

All Wrapped Up In A Bow
by Chance

As I post this today, (8-18-2017) it is the birthday of my mentor, teacher and friend, Ron Feldman. He passed away September 5th, 2014. The song in this video was written and performed by one of my best friends, Chance Hutchison. Chance and I were in a band together in high school, The Action, and Ron managed our band. What Ron really did was change our lives. He became the father of our musical life. He saw our passion and helped us develop it. I don’t think he ever really gained anything monetarily from that relationship. But what he gave, and he gave a lot, he got back from us, and all of the many other musicians he taught and mentored. He got to watch everyone he invested his time an energy in blossom and become better musicians and better people. If you watch the video, there is a moment when he sits and smiles, and though he never saw the final version, this is the look he would have given if he had. That was the look you got when you achieved something great in his eyes. He was brutally honest and you had to earn that look. But if he gave you a complement, you knew you really achieved something. His memory inspires me. The memory of him and his brutal honesty combined with his desire to share his gift with those who he knew would truly work hard, motivates me to this day to continue as a musician. It’s what motivated me to write and complete Megaphone’s album, Sending Out a Signal. ( I talk about this in an earlier blog post )  I’m fortunate to have been in this video with some of my favorite people on the planet and some of the most talented musicians I know.  Thanks to Chance for this song and this video! Watching this video 2 and a half years later still inspires me and I hope it may inspire you in some way.

This video is a visual representation of why I do what I do, why I love what I do and why I do what I love! Today I celebrate my friend Ron Feldman, who was born on this day! The rest of the days of the year, I’ll celebrate being the musician that Ron told me I could be! Cheers everyone! – Matt

Thank You!

I was blown away!

It had been 3 years since our last performance. I wasn’t sure what the turnout might be; you never know with that much time off. But man, you guys blew my mind. You could feel the energy in the room. All I can say is, thank you for helping us make our album release party for Sending Out a Signal an amazing experience for us!

When I got home that night, there were all these great photos and videos posted on Facebook, and once again, I was just blown away. So to keep a record of this night,  I thought we should share some of this stuff here on our site.  So here’s a good start, a video and a couple of photo galleries. Would you like to help us add more? If you have any images or video you would like to share, please send me an email here and I’ll send you info on where to upload. I would love to get photos of YOU at the show.

The whole night felt more like a house party than just a show, really. The guys in Kinky Rhino and Copper Bones are some of my favorite people, so it was great having them all there. And our new friends, Kasson, were super cool and did a great job as well. So, if you missed it, I’m really sorry, but you really did miss a great show! Every band there just killed it!  It may have been my favorite live experience to date.

Thank you, Glenn W Briggs, for posting this video of “Not So Pretty” on Youtube. You’ll find the link above. Below that are 2 photo galleries full of photos taken by some more of our good friends. And if you haven’t already, please head over to our store and get Sending Out a Signal, our new album that is currently only available here! Thanks for reading and please feel free to share this post. – Matt

I’m so excited, I’m so…

I recently found a new craft beer that I really, really like. It’s called “I’m so excited, I’m so scared” and I thought, that’s an odd name for a beer! It also struck me as, that’s an odd thing to say. But as I sit down to write this blog post, I suddenly understand it completely. That is how I feel right at this moment!  I’m so excited to finally let you hear this record, but I can’t explain the unexpected fear I feel to actually click the publish button at the end of this post. Maybe it’s vulnerability, or maybe I’ve been working towards this for so long, I won’t know what to do once it’s done. Whatever the reason, it doesn’t matter, it’s time to push the button.

I’m excited to announce, now you can pre-order the new Megaphone album, Sending Out a Signal right here on our new online store. The pre-order includes 2 exclusive bonus demo tracks, and an immediate mp3 download of the song, “If You Want It, You Can Have It”. On the release date, June 23rd, you’ll be sent a link to download the complete mp3 album. Mp3’s and CDs are available in the new store, and CDs will also be available at the House of Blues show June 24th!

So, thank you, for pre-ordering Sending Out a Signal here on this site! As an independent artist, it’s really appreciated. And thank you for supporting independent music! You can also support by telling friends about us and asking them to check out our music here! Remember, sharing is good karma, so help us send out this signal on social media!

As always, thanks for reading the Megaphone blog. I hope you’ll post your comments about the new album below.

Sending Out a Signal

Sending Out a Signal, the new Megaphone album, is just about to come out. It’s been in the works for so long, it feels kinda weird actually saying that. But, it’s true, it will be out in only a few weeks and I’m very excited for you to finally hear it.  And yes, it will be available at the House of Blues show, June 24th!

A lot happened in the process of making the record. And while it may have taken longer as a result, I think it made it better. It could be just a bunch of songs, but it’s what happens in the process that makes it more.

About 6 years ago, Megaphone kind of stalled out. We went through member changes, our priorities changed and we were all doing different things. Life was happening. Maybe we were done. I don’t know. But, I still wanted to write songs. After realizing things had kind of fallen apart, I took a step back to try to find what it was that made me start Megaphone in the first place. And what I found was, I just wanted to write songs. So, I did. It became my goal to make the best DIY record I could. But early in the process, I lost two people who were instrumental in me becoming a musician and a songwriter. I lost my brother, Pat Bloodwell, in 2012 to suicide due to depression, and my friend, mentor and music teacher, Ron Feldman, in 2014 to cancer. The album now took on a whole new meaning! Now the goal was to complete the record to honor them by making good use of what they gave to me!

Sometimes what goes into making art is not so pretty. But, the results are. Sending Out a Signal is like starting over, square one, a new beginning.  For some, we’re a brand new band, and we might as well be. I’ve gone back to doing things the way I did before the first album. I’m just writing songs and producing music because it’s what I like to do.

So here it is. Goals met, DIY album complete. I’m Sending Out a Signal, I’m reaching out to everyone. And when the signal reaches you, I hope you send it out to someone else. Ron and Pat shared it with me. I put it in Megaphone, and now share it with you. So when it gets to you, keep it going, ok?

Thanks for reading – Matt

House of Blues – June 24

Are you ready for a rock show? Cause it has been 3 years, and I’m READY! In just over a month, Megaphone will finally hit the stage again! Since we haven’t played in such a long time, I thought, this whole show needs to be ridiculous!  So we put together a show with OUR favorite bands! Along with Megaphone, you’ll see Copper Bones and Kinky Rhino. Copper Bones is a superhuman rock duo from Orlando, FL. And Kinky Rhino is a band that reminds me a bit of Queens of the Stone Age and features drummer Jeff Wright (from Social Ghost and Plastic Planets) on guitar and lead vocals. Yes, these are all really great bands; I’ve purchased their albums and I listen to them often! In fact, I’m currently producing Kinky Rhino’s next album right now.  I’ll tell you more about that later!

Doors open at 7:30, show starts at 8pm! Do yourself a favor, and see ALL of these bands! You’ll thank me later, I promise. And don’t forget to order your tickets now, right on this page!

New Album title

So late February / early March has come and gone and the new megaphone album still isn’t here yet. I know, I know,  but these things take time I guess, a little more time than I expected apparently.  Who knew?  Obviously not me!  A design delay here, a technical issue there and time gets away from you. But, the good news is, even though the process is taking longer than I thought, there is progress! And things are sounding and looking better than expected.

One thing I didn’t realize was slowing things down so much was the album title. I’ve had so many different ideas for the tittle through the whole process, from writing, to recording, to mixing, it just kept kind of changing. But I wasn’t feeling a connection to any of them. That’s important I think. It’s been such a long time since we’ve put out something new, I wanted to feel like whatever statement I was making meant something to me, and wasn’t just a name. It wasn’t like I was agonizing over it. But I would come up with a name, think it was cool, then after a while, “meh”.

And then I got an idea I really liked.

Sending Out a Signal is the next megaphone album. As soon as that idea showed up, the visuals and the artwork started to fall in place. So hang tight, It is running a bit late, but it is on the way very soon.

Thanks for reading this post, and if you liked it, please leave a comment. In fact, I have a question for you: When the new album comes out, would you prefer a digital download or a physical copy (CD)? Or maybe both?
